Intra-specific variation in lichen secondary compounds across environmental gradients on Signy Island, maritime Antarctic

چکیده

Abstract Lichens produce various carbon-based secondary compounds (CBSCs) in response to abiotic conditions and herbivory. Although lichen CBSCs have received considerable attention with regard responses UV-B exposure, very little is known about intra-specific variation across environmental gradients their role protection against herbivory the Antarctic. Here we report on of two widely distributed common Antarctic lichens, Usnea antarctica Umbilicaria , between sites different solar exposure (NW–SE) along natural nitrogen (N) which are associated changing lichen-invertebrate associations Signy Island (South Orkney Islands, maritime Antarctic). Fumarprotocetraric usnic acid concentrations showed no relationships lichen-N or invertebrate abundance. However, fumarprotocetraric concentration was 13 times higher at inland compared coastal N-gradients. Gyrophoric 33% lower sun-facing (northerly exposed) habitats more shaded (south-facing) rocks declined elevation. positively correlated abundance species richness microarthropods, similar patterns found N. This initial investigation indicates that there can be large intraspecific CBSC relative short distances (< 500 m) raises further questions regarding current understanding lichens relation biotic pressures.

Lichen Specific Thallus Mass and Secondary Compounds Change across a Retrogressive Fire-Driven Chronosequence

In the long-term absence of major disturbances ecosystems enter a state of retrogression, which involves declining soil fertility and consequently a reduction in decomposition rates. Recent studies have looked at how plant traits such as specific leaf mass and amounts of secondary compounds respond to declining soil fertility during retrogression, but there are no comparable studies for lichen ...

Foraging strategies of chinstrap penguins at Signy Island, Antarctica: importance of benthic feeding on Antarctic krill

Chinstrap penguins Pygoscelis antarctica are one of the major consumers of Antarctic krill Euphausia superba in the Southern Ocean. To examine their foraging strategy, we studied foraging trip patterns and diving behaviour of chinstrap penguins breeding at Signy Island, Antarctica, using time-depth recorders. Foraging trips of penguins could be divided into 2 groups, short diurnal (7.8 h) and l...

Burrowing in the Antarctic anemone, Halcampoides sp., from Signy Island, Antarctica.

Antarctic anemones of the genus Halcampoides inhabit low intertidal and shallow subtidal zones. They readily burrow into soft sediments following disturbance. The process of re-burying was recorded using time-lapse video in the aquarium of the British Antarctic Survey with specimens of a species collected from the shallow sublittoral (<1 m depth) at Signy Island. Penetration of the sediment tak...

Shifting Baselines in Antarctic Ecosystems; Ecophysiological Response to Warming in Lissarca miliaris at Signy Island, Antarctica

The Antarctic Peninsula has experienced a rapid increase in atmospheric temperature over the last 50 years. Whether or not marine organisms thriving in this cold stenothermal environment are able to cope with warming is of concern. Here, we present changes to the growth and shell characteristics of the ecologically important, small and short lived brooding bivalve Lissarca miliaris from Signy I...

Microbial diversity and community structure across environmental gradients in Bransfield Strait, Western Antarctic Peninsula

The Southern Ocean is currently subject to intense investigations, mainly related to its importance for global biogeochemical cycles and its alarming rate of warming in response to climate change. Microbes play an essential role in the functioning of this ecosystem and are the main drivers of the biogeochemical cycling of elements. Yet, the diversity and abundance of microorganisms in this syst...
